The Green Standard in Exercise

Green exercise has proven its worth. Outdoor exercise not only turns up the dial on intentions to stick with an exercise program but it specifically increases self-esteem and positive affect—key indicators that transform good intentions into action and initial bouts of exercise into regular physical activity. Combining all the brain benefits of exercise with the distinct mental benefits of immersion in greenspace—cognitive enhancing and mood-regulating benefits—magnifies them. Greenspace exercise should be considered a brain tonic, a therapeutic intervention that serves as a preventive agent warding off stress and its consequences, and one that can be reached for when the psychological seas are rough. Indeed, researchers have shown that the sedentary and those with mental distress have the most to gain from greenspace exercise. The ability of greenspace exercise to foster positive thoughts and decrease the negative ones associated with exercise can enhance the intention and motivation to stick with the plan and allow individuals to continue taking “the medicine.” As it becomes evident that positive affect is the facilitator of exercise adherence, it seems obvious that the answer to the compliance problem may, at least to some degree, be found in green exercise. The end result is a fast-acting, low-cost intervention, open to all and devoid of side effects.
